A Switch Into a New Season

As Parklands Baptist Church celebrates its Golden Jubilee, Bishop J.B. Masinde challenged the church to recognise that 50 years marks not only a celebration of the past, but an entrance into a new season.

He spoke of transition, a fresh anointing and a new impetus from God that would propel the church into its future. The history and legacy of the church should be celebrated, but the church must also look forward to what God is about to do.

The central message was simple: there is a switch that God wants to activate through the Holy Spirit.

1. Pentecost: The Jubilee Switch

Bishop Masinde connected the significance of 50 years with another biblical “50” — Pentecost, which occurred 50 days after Passover.

At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the Church. Peter explained that this was the fulfilment of Joel’s prophecy:

“I will pour out my Spirit on all people.”

The promise was no longer limited to a select few. Sons and daughters, young and old, men and women were included.

The message for the church was clear: the Holy Spirit is being poured out for everyone.

Nobody is excluded from God’s purpose. Every generation has a place in what God is doing.

2. The Holy Spirit Was Present From Creation

Bishop Masinde took the congregation back to Genesis 1.

The earth was formless, empty and covered in darkness, but the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. Then God spoke:

“Let there be light.”

And light came into existence.

The pattern is significant: the Spirit was present, waiting for the Word of God to be spoken, and creation followed.

In the same way, Bishop Masinde challenged Parklands Baptist Church to recognise that the Holy Spirit is present and ready to bring something new into existence.

Where there has been emptiness, God can bring fullness.

Where there has been darkness, He can bring light.

Where there has been death, He can bring life.

The church must therefore speak and receive the Word of God with faith, knowing that the Holy Spirit works through God’s Word.

3. From Temporary Visitation to Permanent Presence

The message also traced the work of the Holy Spirit throughout Scripture.

In the Old Testament, the Spirit would come upon particular individuals for specific assignments. Samson received power for his assignment. David was empowered to accomplish God’s purposes.

But the Holy Spirit’s presence was not yet experienced by God’s people in the same way that it would be after Pentecost.

Through Joel, God promised something different:

“I will pour out my Spirit on all people.”

This promise was fulfilled at Pentecost.

The Holy Spirit would no longer simply come for a moment and leave. Through Christ, believers would receive the promise of the Spirit as a continuing presence.

4. Jesus Models Life in the Spirit

Jesus Himself demonstrated what it means to live and minister through the power of the Holy Spirit.

He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and at His baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon Him. He was then led by the Spirit and began His public ministry in the power of the Spirit.

In Luke 4:18, Jesus declared:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me.”

Bishop Masinde used Jesus’ return to Nazareth to illustrate the difference between history and future.

The people of Nazareth knew Jesus according to His history. They knew Him as the carpenter, Mary’s son and a member of a familiar family.

But Jesus came declaring what the Spirit had now empowered Him to become.

The church can celebrate where it has come from without becoming trapped by its history.

The past is something to honour, but the future is something to embrace.

The Jubilee switch calls the church to move from simply remembering what God has done to receiving what God wants to do next.

5. Don’t Enter the Future With an Old Version

One of the most memorable illustrations in the message compared spiritual growth to software updates.

Technology is constantly being updated. An older device may not be able to receive the latest software because its version is outdated.

Bishop Masinde challenged the congregation:

“What version of you are you?”

God may have new things He wants to download into our lives, ministries and churches, but sometimes an old mindset, old habits or old ways of doing things prevent us from receiving them.

Jesus told His disciples that there was much more He wanted to reveal to them, but they were not yet ready to receive it. He then promised that the Spirit of truth would guide them into all truth and reveal what was yet to come.

The Holy Spirit brings the upgrade.

The Jubilee switch therefore involves becoming spiritually ready for what God is doing next.

6. The Holy Spirit Changes Our Worship

The Holy Spirit does not only empower ministry. He also transforms our worship.

Jesus told the Samaritan woman that a time was coming when true worshippers would worship the Father in spirit and in truth.

Bishop Masinde declared that the coming season should bring a switch in the worship life of the church.

The church’s worship should not simply be a continuation of what has always been done. As the Holy Spirit moves, worship should deepen, grow and become increasingly centred on God.

There is a switch in worship.

7. The Holy Spirit Changes Our Prayer Life

Another major area of transformation is prayer.

Bishop Masinde identified prayerlessness as one of the weaknesses of many believers and pointed to Romans 8:26–27, which teaches that the Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes for us.

Sometimes we do not know what to pray or how to pray according to God’s will. The Holy Spirit helps us.

The challenge was therefore to allow the Spirit to bring a switch in our prayer lives.

Instead of struggling through prayer in our own strength, believers can depend on the Holy Spirit to help them pray according to God’s will.

As the church moves into its next season, Bishop Masinde called for a deeper and more Spirit-empowered culture of prayer.

8. The Holy Spirit Guides Us

The Holy Spirit is also our guide.

Bishop Masinde explained the ministry of the Holy Spirit as the One who comes alongside believers and walks with them.

Just as he needed someone familiar with the roads of Pipeline to guide him through an unfamiliar area, believers need the Holy Spirit to guide them through life.

We can become lost when we depend entirely on our own understanding.

But the Holy Spirit knows the way.

He guides us in:

• Our personal lives
• Our families
• Our businesses
• Our ministries
• Our decisions
• Our future
• Our walk with God

The Holy Spirit is not simply an occasional visitor. He is our companion and guide.

9. The Holy Spirit Gives Power for Mission

Acts 1:8 declares:

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses…”

The Holy Spirit empowers believers to fulfil the Great Commission.

Bishop Masinde commended Parklands Baptist Church for being an outward-looking and “going” church. He challenged the church to continue going — taking the Gospel beyond its walls and into Kenya, Africa and the nations.

He prophetically envisioned the Parklands Baptist name being represented in cities and nations around the world.

The next season should therefore not simply produce a bigger church, but a church with greater missionary influence.

The Holy Spirit gives the power to go.

10. The Holy Spirit Produces Spiritual Fruit

The Spirit also changes who we are.

Galatians 5 contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit.

When we walk in the Spirit, His fruit begins to grow in our lives:

• Love
• Joy
• Peace
• Patience
• Kindness
• Goodness
• Faithfulness
• Gentleness
• Self-control

The evidence of the Spirit is not only power but also character.

A genuine move of the Spirit should produce people who look increasingly like Christ.

The Jubilee switch must therefore affect both what we do and who we become.

11. Every Generation Has a Place

Bishop Masinde returned to Joel’s prophecy:

• Sons and daughters will prophesy.
• Young men will see visions.
• Old men will dream dreams.

The future belongs to every generation.

Young People: See Visions

The young were challenged to become solution-bringers.

Joseph was young when God gave him wisdom to solve Egypt’s crisis. Daniel and his friends were young when God used them in Babylon. Esther was a young woman when God used her to save a nation.

The church should therefore expect God to give young people visions, ideas and solutions for the challenges facing Kenya, Africa and the world.

Older Generations: Dream Again

Those who have been serving God for many years were encouraged not to conclude that their useful years are over.

As long as we are alive, there is still room to dream.

There can be another book.

Another song.

Another business.

Another ministry.

Another church.

Another assignment.

Age does not cancel God’s purpose.

The church needs both the vision of the young and the dreams of the older generation.

12. The Ultimate Switch: Receiving Jesus Christ

The message concluded with the most important switch of all.

The Holy Spirit cannot simply be received as an idea or religious experience. Jesus said that the world cannot receive the Spirit because it does not know Him.

The pathway begins with Jesus Christ.

Bishop Masinde shared his personal testimony of giving his life to Christ as a teenager and encouraged those who had never surrendered their lives to Jesus to make that decision.

The story of the prodigal son illustrated God’s heart toward those who return to Him.

The Father does not wait to condemn the returning son.

He runs toward him.

The Jubilee is therefore an invitation to:

Come out of darkness and into light.
Come out of bondage and into freedom.
Come out of the old life and into the new.

13. Restoration for Those Who Have Drifted

The altar call also included those who had once walked with Christ but had drifted away.

Bishop Masinde emphasised that Jubilee is a season of restoration.

Those who have fallen away do not need to remain in a place of defeat. There is grace to return.

The church prayed for those returning to Christ, asking the Holy Spirit to restore their passion for prayer, Scripture, service and fellowship.

The message was one of hope:

The church has a rich history to celebrate, but the greatest challenge is to prepare for what God wants to do next.

The Holy Spirit brings the switch:

• From old versions to new versions
• From limitation to possibility
• From prayerlessness to Spirit-empowered prayer
• From routine worship to Spirit-and-truth worship
• From uncertainty to divine guidance
• From inactivity to mission
• From spiritual stagnation to growth
• From ordinary living to Spirit-empowered purpose

The call to Parklands Baptist Church is to receive a fresh visitation of the Holy Spirit and step boldly into the future God has prepared.

My life will never be the same again.
My family will never be the same again.
My future will never be the same again.
There is a switch in my life through the Holy Spirit.
I receive the Holy Spirit.
I receive fresh vision.
I receive fresh power.
I receive fresh guidance.
I receive fresh dreams.
I am moving into my future.
The switch has happened.
